I'm a Little Teapot comes from a memory of being four years old, of the excitement and comfort that could attach itself to a small, particular object. The antique Japanese Satsuma elephant teapot fills the 36 x 48 oil canvas with patterned detail, jewel-toned blues, turquoise, orange, gold, and warm browns, its glazed surface painted with close attention. The scale makes the elephant feel monumental, alive, anything but a simple teapot. What began as a childhood object becomes something more: a vessel for memory, warmth, and the lasting strangeness of things we love when we are very young.
