I am four years old, filled with wide-eyed excitement and joy, wrapped in love and comfort every time I see it. A long-ago, hazy memory shared between mother and child. A feeling that has lasted a lifetime.
With my brother off to school, my mother would treat me to "tea" and toast. Opening the cupboard, she would get down the "elfenant" — an antique Japanese Satsuma teapot given to her by my great grandmother. Sparkly and gold, the treasured elephant magically called me to come out and play while pretending to be a big girl having grown-up tea.
I wanted to capture that playful, childlike quality of it coming to life in my inner child's mind — the pure joy and playfulness it still brings me.
